Oh Noes, not nuclear!
Nuclear power is slowing coming back into the limelight after many years of being shelved, it seems. The UK is currently debating this, and the Russians are skipping the debate, and building them A Floating Chernobyl. It logical to assume that this is being done because of the rapid decline of the planet's natural resources. As we edge ever closer to running out of oil, people are looking to other options. Politicians are bringing nuclear power back on the energy agenda, and people are openly saying the word nuclear without having to defend themselves from nay sayers.
Nuclear power is seen as a very bad thing by a great number of people, and those people refuse to look forward, and instead look at what has already happened, and what has gone wrong (Think Chernoybl). There is a huge fear associated with the whole idea of nuclear power, and it is mostly unfounded fear.
If you say the word nuclear to most people, they imagine the ever scary image of Hiroshima, and it's utter destruction at the hands of the nuclear weapons. They also imagine Chernobyl, burning down to the ground, and irradiating everything for hundreds of miles. It's not to say these are bad things to remember, as it reminds us of the terrible power of the nucleus, it keeps us on our technological toes.
But people, there are safe nuclear technologies out there, ready to go!
All of the things you imagine that are associated with nuclear technology are gone. Gone are the exploding reactors (see Pebble bed reactor), gone too are the days of overly large reactors, requiring on site refinement.
Floating a small pebble bed reactor out at sea is a great idea, as this can reach any potential power shortage areas quickly, and still have plenty of power to run a city.
So, a call to all... Stop with the nuclear nay-saying. Short term, nuclear is good for us all, and well worth the investment. If we don't look at these technologies now, we are going be energy screwed very soon.
