Why Windows update sucks
Windows update... love it or hate it, it's here to stay.
Microsoft are delivering more and more updates via the autonomous patching system "Windows Update", which uses the internet to channel this information.
The concept is good, any security flaws are quickly updated and the system can carry on without problems.
Microsoft have done two things right here. The update notification and download is executed well, there are never any glitches with this part. It will always download the patches, and always show the globe indicating a new patch is ready.
The problem I have is that everything else about the update system is flawed, and it doesn't look easy to fix.
Take for example the scenario I experienced yesterday.
I had just updated the remote computer with a new update for Arcserve, and the computer required a reboot. The alloted time for the whole reboot and update operation was one hour, or approximately one lunchtime.
So, I rebooted the computer. Ten minutes later the computer came back up, and I was able to connect and verify. Perfect, my job should have been done. But this was only the start of the problem.
Windows kindly notified me (with an annoyingly large popup) that there were new updates ready to download and install. Taking into account that I see this prompt about a hundred times a week I clicked OK, knowing full well that any patch wouldn't take permanent effect until a reboot (only true for some types of update).
The update was a nontrivial one. It was neither a system critical driver update or any deep down OS update, in all it looked like nothing special.
As I had a little time to spare before the workers came back to their desks, I decided to reboot to stop the annoying prompts from driving me to exit from the building from a very high floor.
15 minutes past... on the last reboot, the server was back by now.
25 minutes went on... I thought maybe this was a large patch, or maybe a system check was in place.
40 minutes later I decided to start pinging the server. I soon noticed a pattern, the server would come up for about three seconds, and suddenly stop responding... over, and over again.
Panic set in. I was screwed.
A day and two very tired engineers later, we finally managed to fully repair the system to its former (very critical) glory.
God damn Microsoft. If they can't even make patches that work, they should stop making OS's.
Not only did this cost us a lot of money, it cost us dearly in the PR dept. Microsoft should answer for this.
They should either have a quality control system that makes sure that no patch is flawed, they should engineer the patches so that if the above boot->starting windows->bluescreen->boot.... scenario happens, the patch is automatically removed, and the system restore kicks in to repair any issues.
MS should also make it easier to repair their OS, as any small glitch leading to even a moderate problem can cause hours of tech pain.
Please fix your patching system MS, you owe us at least that.
